Thomas Walsh of Limerick: Man of Faith

Thomas Walsh was born in Ballylin near Limerick in 1730. He was ignorant of the Gospel but prayed to saints and angels. He desired to be religious but was filled with pride, anger, self-will, revenge, evil speaking, lying and other sins. It was his brother who first pointed him to the written Scriptures which revealed the error of his Catholic religion. Then one day when 19 years old he heard the true Gospel preached for the first time from a travelling Methodist preacher on the streets of Limerick on St. Patrick’s Day. He soon joined the Methodists. After a long period of terrible internal wrestling he experienced a mighty conversion. In this church he experienced the power of God and the love and joy of Christian fellowship. The preaching was frequently drowned out by the prayers and praise of those gathered. Old friends who knew him called him mad, deceived, a hypocrite and worse.

A quick work was done in his heart and God began to raise him up to preach the Gospel. Beside Irish he mastered English, Latin, Greek and Hebrew. While John Wesley was on a three month preaching tour of Ireland Thom-as talked to him concerning the call of God. He was soon preaching twice every day on the streets of Limerick. Souls who heard him began to come under deep conviction of sin and as a result were saved. He left his work as a schoolteacher and began to travel to preach to little groups of scattered believers which began to grow and thrive. His sermons were rarely less than an hour and were as loud as they were long. He would preach two and three times a day in the open-air with great success. People would drop to their knees and cry out for mercy. He preached on mountains and highways, in meadows, private houses, prisons and ships. He was attacked and frequently had to run for his life from a stone-throwing mob.

In 1752 Wesley held his first Irish Leaders Conference in Limerick. Thomas was one of only nine itinerant preachers in Ireland. He was given responsibility for Dublin, Cork, Limerick and those counties around Belfast in the North. He travelled with Wesley preaching by his side to large gatherings. In 1754 he attended the main Methodist conference in London. Wesley said of him that he did not know any preacher who in so few years was the instrument of converting so many sinners from the error of their ways. He also said of him “Such a master of Biblical knowledge I never saw before, and never expect to see again.” He believed that if he had six men like Thomas Walsh he would turn England upside down. After only nine years as a Christian Thomas went to his reward at the age of just twenty eight. He had literally worn out his body in abundant labours.

Catherine (Katie) Booth-Clibborn: Woman of Faith - Pt.2

Catherine (Katie) Booth-Clibborn (1858-1955)  (Pt II ) After just 3 months in Paris, Katie’s brother Bramwell, visited the SA work, and heard the testimonies of 70 newly saved saints from sad and sordid backgrounds. But the work did not only touch the lives of the ‘down and outs’for sons and daughters of gentry and wealthy merchants alike shunned titles and inheritances for service to their Saviour. Kate was the talk of Paris which fondly named her ‘la Maréchale’ (the Field Marshall).

On her way to and from the hall, she would often greet a Roman Catholic priest. One day he stopped and said, “Madame, la Maréchale, I want to tell you that since you began your work in this quarter of Paris, the moral atmosphere of the whole place has changed.” He went on to say how he had known these people for decades and that he never imagined that they could change.

Kate and the SA branched out into Switzerland the following year and it was here that her darkest hour became her greatest victory. Arrested and tried for being a woman and speaking in public, Kate defended with perfect reasoning that if she and her co-worker had been dancers, actresses or singers, there would be no dispute over them appearing in public. In spite of having nothing to retort, her defence was rejected. The truth was that in 6 weeks in Geneva the SA meetings had profoundly affected all Theatre attendance as hundreds had attended and many repented. The hours in a police cell had been dark, yet God met with her and she returned to Paris to find she was a household name.

At age 28, the Maréchale, married Arthur S. Clibborn from Bessbrook, near Newry. Clibborn had been sent to Paris to assist with the SA work. Together they had ten children, all of whom were saved by age 5 and nine of whom went in to full time ministry.

The ministry of Arthur and Kate Booth-Clibborn soon extended beyond France, to Holland, Belgium, the USA, UK and Ireland. Thousands heard her speak in capacity-packed meetings in Dublin in the 1920s. Significantly, their ministry took on new life when the Spirit of God was poured out upon their children at home in a real Pentecost which convinced them of the reality of this new movement. So rich and full is the fruit of their long ministry lives that a full reading thereof is highly recommended. The Maréchale, by James Strahan, or the The Maréchale’s own work, They Endured and
Our Children, are to be found second hand, but most worthwhile and inspiring.

Catherine (Katie) Booth-Clibborn: Woman of Faith - Pt.1

Catherine (Katie) Booth-Clibborn (1858-1955). Little Katie Booth was told by her legendary mother, Catherine Booth, wife of William Booth (founder of the Salvation Army: SA), “Now, Katie, you are not here in the world for yourself. You have been sent here for others…”—words which burnt in her heart for most of her 96 years.

Such was her foundation in the Word of God that by age 12 she was teaching a Sunday School class of children, during her teens she held her own meetings and missions, and by 17 she was a hugely popular speaker at packed SA meetings held by her father all over the UK. If a meeting was rowdy or there was an uncontrolled mob, William Booth would call for Katie to speak and most times the crowds were hushed to attention. It is no surprise therefore that at 22 years of age, her father believed her spiritually ready to pioneer the SA work in France (French had been her favourite subject at school). Katie and her 3 young female SA ‘Officers’ set up humble home in the poorest part of Paris and hired a hall which could hold 600. By day they would hand out leaflets announcing the meetings of ‘Good News’ and by night they would preach in the Hall. At first their faith was tested beyond their expectations as drunken mobs would disrupt the meetings and Kate’s life-long struggle with a spinal problem flared up. Her companions feared she may have to return home, yet Kate’s resolve that God had called her to Paris strengthened and after 2 weeks of constant disruption in the meetings, in a moment of heaven-sent inspiration, Kate announced that she would give 20 minutes to her audience to dance, if they would give her 20 minutes to speak. This appealed to those present and after 20 minutes of dancing they settled down to listen to Kate, not just for 20 minutes but for one hour and 20 minutes—such was their rapt attention as she told them of the Saviour who could give them pleasure beyond anything this world had to offer.

After the meeting ended, the loudest and roughest of all men present remained behind to tell Kate his story of bitterness at the loss of his wife and only child, and the many bad things he had done since. As Kate retold him of God’s love for him he confessed his sins and asked Christ to forgive him. After that night, he devoted himself to guard and protect the young SA women and the meetings. Emile’s was the first, and a notorious woman called the “Devil’s Wife”, was the second conversion of many in that sordid Parisian age.

To be continued in Part 2

    Limerick City Church

We are a church that has a real burden for the city of Limerick. We are praying that many will experience true salvation in Christ and that the Lord will pour out His Holy Spirit in a genuine revival.
