Henry Grattan Guinness

Picture
Henry Grattan Guinness (1835-1910), grandson of Arthur Guinness founder of the Irish brewery, was born in Dublin in Ireland in the year of Halley’s Comet. As a young man he travelled England preaching the Gospel to large crowds as an itinerant evangelist and then embarked on a three year preaching tour which took him half way round the world. In England and Scotland he preached in the historic Revival pulpits of George Whitefield, Robert Murray M'Cheyne, and Robert Haldane. He preached with C.H. Spurgeon and D.L. Moody and was considered one of the greatest preachers of that generation preaching at times to crowds of 20-30,000. In 1872, he started a missionary institute in Dublin with just six students. After three years he had over 100 students and moved to London. In the first 30 years of the Institute 1,500 young people were trained and sent out to the foreign mission-field. He started several different mission societies, wrote a number of classic books on prophecy, and raised a family of children who served God faithfully.

“I do now most heartily desire to live but to exalt Jesus; to live preaching and to die preaching; to preach to perishing sinners till I drop down dead.” – H.G. Guinness

"Flame of Fire." Henry Grattan Guinness (1835-1910), grandson of Arthur Guinness founder of the Irish brewery, was born in Dublin in the year of Halley’s Comet. Both his mother and father had been widowed.
His mother’s first husband was killed in a duel with Daniel O’Connell.
His father, Captain John Guinness, was Arthur Guinness's youngest son.

No doubt named after Henry Grattan, Ireland's greatest orator and politician.

At 17, after a night of wrestling with God, he was converted to Christ. He became a life long teetotaller.

"I sought solitary places in the woods where I could pour out my soul in prayer, with strong crying and tears. Old things passed away, and all things became new. How could I keep silence, knowing as I did, that those around me (in Ireland) were utterly ignorant of the salvation in which I was rejoicing, and most of them abject slaves of Roman superstition."

After college he travelled England preaching the Gospel to large crowds as an itinerant evangelist and embarked on a three year preaching tour which took him half way round the world. In England and Scotland he preached in the pulpits of George Whitefield, Robert Murray M'Cheyne, and Robert Haldane. He preached alongside C.H. Spurgeon and D.L. Moody and was considered one of the greatest preachers of that generation preaching to crowds of 20-30,000.

in dublin - Judges, members of Parliament, orators, Fellows of College, lights of the various proffessions, the rank and fashion of the metropolis have been drawn out. Among them the Lord Lieutenant, the Lord Chancellor and the Lord Justice of Appeal, etc. Such a preacher is a great power, prepared and sent forth by God, and as such Mr. Guinness has been hailed by all denominations."

"Flame of Fire."

faith missions

In March 1873, Henry and his wife Fanny start the famous East London Missionary Training Institute, also known as Harley College, at Harley House in Bromley-by-Bow, East End of London with just six students. The renowned Dr. Thomas John Barnardo is co-director with Dr. Guinness and is greatly influenced by him. The school trains 1,330 missionaries for 30 societies of 30 denominations.

In 1873, Guinness founds the East London Institute for Home and Foreign Missions, the root of the
Regions Beyond Missionary Union. In 1877, he founds the Livingstone Inland Mission. His son, Dr. Henry Grattan Guinness, founds the Congo-Balolo Mission in 1888 and co-founds the Congo Reform Association in 1904.

In 1883, Elizabeth Hulme offers Guinness Cliff House near
Calver, Derbyshire. Harley College is renamed Hulme Cliff College. Now known as Cliff College it continues to this day training and equipping Christians for mission and evangelism.

Harley College, also known as the East London Missionary Training School.

In 1872, he started a missionary institute in Dublin with just six students. After three years he had over 100 students and moved to London. In the first 30 years of the Institute 1,500 young people were trained and sent out to the foreign mission-field. He started several different mission societies, wrote a number of classic books, and raised a family of children who served God faithfully. His daughter married the son of Hudson Taylor, founder of China Inland Mission, and wrote Taylor's official biography.

As a writer, Guinness focused on the personal and triumphant aspects of Christ's character and work. His hymns were often printed privately as enclosures for letters and parcels—a method of "personal evangelism" through the mail.
