Henry Grattan Guinness (1835-1910), grandson of Arthur Guinness founder of the Irish brewery, was born in Dublin in Ireland in the year of Halley’s Comet. As a young man he travelled England preaching the Gospel to large crowds as an itinerant evangelist and then embarked on a three year preaching tour which took him half way round the world. In England and Scotland he preached in the historic Revival pulpits of George Whitefield, Robert Murray M'Cheyne, and Robert Haldane. He preached with C.H. Spurgeon and D.L. Moody and was considered one of the greatest preachers of that generation preaching at times to crowds of 20-30,000. In 1872, he started a missionary institute in Dublin with just six students. After three years he had over 100 students and moved to London. In the first 30 years of the Institute 1,500 young people were trained and sent out to the foreign mission-field. He started several different mission societies, wrote a number of classic books on prophecy, and raised a family of children who served God faithfully.
“I do now most heartily desire to live but to exalt Jesus; to live preaching and to die preaching; to preach to perishing sinners till I drop down dead.” – H.G. Guinness |
"Flame of Fire." Henry Grattan Guinness (1835-1910), grandson of Arthur Guinness founder of the Irish brewery, was born in Dublin in the year of Halley’s Comet. Both his mother and father had been widowed.
His mother’s first husband was killed in a duel with Daniel O’Connell.
His father, Captain John Guinness, was Arthur Guinness's youngest son.
No doubt named after Henry Grattan, Ireland's greatest orator and politician.
At 17, after a night of wrestling with God, he was converted to Christ. He became a life long teetotaller.
"I sought solitary places in the woods where I could pour out my soul in prayer, with strong crying and tears. Old things passed away, and all things became new. How could I keep silence, knowing as I did, that those around me (in Ireland) were utterly ignorant of the salvation in which I was rejoicing, and most of them abject slaves of Roman superstition."
After college he travelled England preaching the Gospel to large crowds as an itinerant evangelist and embarked on a three year preaching tour which took him half way round the world. In England and Scotland he preached in the pulpits of George Whitefield, Robert Murray M'Cheyne, and Robert Haldane. He preached alongside C.H. Spurgeon and D.L.
